CAN’T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WEATHER….that’s for sure!
Sunday April 28, 2019 – Woke up in Glacier Bay today!
Well – due to the FABULOUS weather – the crew and captain of
the Wilderness Explorer decided to drop Lynn Canal and spend 2 days (instead of
one) in Glacier Bay. No one was
complaining! This morning we woke up in
Beartrack Cove. We picked up Ranger Nicole
in Bartlett Cove at 6am and she will be on board for the entire 2 days that we
are in the park. She is a veteran ranger
– and has spent the past 6 years here in Glacier Bay (and winter’s in the
Everglades)
We had a lovely Sunday Brunch (sorry Birgit – no photos
again) which included Blueberry-Frenchtoast-Bread Pudding with Lemon Curd. OMG was that good!
After Breakfast we all selected an “Ops” which is
‘boat-speak’ for an activity off the boat.
Our choices were Bushwhacking, Kayaking and a Skiff Ride. Jim signed up for Bushwhacking (of course)
and mom and dad and I put our name down for the skiff ride. We buckled into our orange life vests and
carefully got into the little zodiac skiff and toured Beartrack Cove. It was a beautiful day and even mom enjoyed
the ride (after getting over the cold)
Good thing I brought extra hand gloves……
In the afternoon we motered down Glacier Bay – WE ARE THE
ONLY BOAT IN THE ENTIRE BAY! Since we
are early in the season – we are literally the FIRST boat in the bay. Normally we would have gone where all the
other cruise ships go – which is the Margerie Glacier and Pacific Glacier BUT
instead we cruised down to the John Hopkins Glacier. This will be the only time a boat gets to
visit this glacier – because the Park Service closes the bay for so that the
seals can have their pups on the ice floes in peace. Even the boat crew came out on deck since
they will never see this again either.
It was a BEAUTIFUL way to end the day – with sunset on the
glacier.
Karen the intrepid – signing out….
